Het stadhuis op de Grote Markt bestaat uit twee delen: de lakenhal met onafgewerkt belfort en het Paleis van de Grote Raad. Waarom het belfort niet afgewerkt wordt? De lakenhandel gaat in de veertiende eeuw achteruit en daardoor is er geen geld meer om het gebouw af te werken. Tweehonderd jaar lang blijft het belfort een ruwbouw, tot het in de zestiende eeuw eindelijk een voorlopig dak krijgt.
Inmiddels is het belfort wel UNESCO werelderfgoed.
