Wie geluk heeft en komt wandelen tijdens de openingsuren van de Dienst voor Toerisme in het voormalige stadhuis op de Markt van Zottegem, kan er de sleutel van de crypte krijgen.In die crypte onder de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Hemelvaartkerk, bereikbaar langs een koepel, liggen de skeletten van Lamoraal graaf van Egmont en zijn vrouw Sabina Van Beieren. “Andere historische figuren krijgen eeuwige rust in een sarcofaag”, zegt De Looze. “Hier ligt het koppel open en bloot. Uniek.” Egmont werd onthoofd op 5 juni 1568 op de Grote Markt van Brussel.
In de Raadzaal van het stadhuis hangt ook het 19de-eeuwse schilderij Les têtes coupées. “Aan de boogschuttersgilde, waarvan hij keizer was, had Egmont gevraagd om zijn lichaam na zijn dood naar Zottegem over te brengen”, vertelt De Looze. “En zo geschiedde.”
