De naam Waterland is eenvoudig te verklaren, maar die van Oudeman is minder voor de hand liggend. De term heeft niets te maken met een man op leeftijd, maar staat voor 'verlaten gebied'. De oorspronkelijke naam van dit dorp is minstens even mooi als de huidige en verwijst naar haar patroonheilige: Sint-Niclaes-ter-Varent.
