Ath is gelegen aan de Dender. De stad werd verschillende malen versterkt, onder andere door Karel V en Vauban. Bezienswaardigheden zijn de Burbanburcht, de St. Julienkerk, de St. Maartenkerk en het stadhuis. Het was in Ath dat er vrede geloten werd op 4 juni 1357 tussen de Vlaamse Graaf Lodewijk van Male en zijn vrouw Margaretha van Male met de Luxemburgse Hertog Wenceslas. Daardoor kwam er een eind aan de Brabantse Successieoorlog en verwerft Vlaanderen Mechelen en Antwerpen.
