Rogier Van der Weyden is één van de Vlaamse Primitieven uit de 15e eeuw, tijdgenoot van de gebroeders Van Eyck. Hij werd geboren in Doornik als Roger de la Pasture. Hij werkte er jarenlang in het atelier van zijn meester Robert Campin. Zijn belangrijkste werl is de "De Kruisafneming". In 1435 wordt van der Weyden stadsschilder in Brussel. Hij werkt er jarenlang aan de gerechtigheidspanelen voor het nieuwe stadhuis, maar dat is jammer genoeg verloren gegaan in de Franse bombardement van 1695.
