Jarenlang speelde Station As een centrale rol in de steenkoolontginning in deze streek, want van hieruit vertrokken de vele mijnwerkers en kolenwagens naar de nabijgelegen mijnen in Eisden, Waterschei en Winterslag. Nu vind je in een gerestaureerde trein het smalste bezoekersonthaal van het Nationaal Park.
Tot 2017 werd ten noorden en ten zuiden van het Kolenspoor berggrind gewonnen. Hierna werd het gebied door het Herstructureringscomité (nu Grindcomité) op een landschappelijke manier heringericht, alvorens het terug te geven aan de natuur. Het gebied is genoemd naar de vlakbij gelegen zwerfkei die de grens markeert tussen de voormalige gemeenten Lanklaar, Niel-bij-As en Mechelen-aan-de-Maas.
