Onder de vruchtbare leem zit hier een waterdoorlatende kalklaag. De Romeinen gebruikten deze kalk (die men in de volgskmond mergel noemt) al in hun bouwwerken. Ook bij de bouw van heel wat Haspengouwse kerken, waaronder de basiliek van Tongeren, kwamen de Heerse kalkstenen goed van pas. Tussen 1930 en 1960 kweekte men in deze voormalige mergelgroeven miljoenen champignons. Nu vormen deze grotten (ook wel mergelkuilen genoemd) een van de voornaamste overwinteringsplaatsen voor vleermuizen in West-Europa.
