Lausanne ligt op 495 m boven zeeniveau, ten noorden van het Meer van Genève. Door het centrum van de stad, gelegen op de heuvels van Cité, Le Bourg en Saint-Laurent; stromen de rivieren Louve en Flon. De oppervlakte van de gemeente is 41,4 km².
De Romeinen bouwden er een militair kamp genaamd Lousanna, op de plaats van een Keltische nederzetting, dicht bij het meer, waar nu Vidy en Ouchy zijn; op een heuvel waar een vesting stond die Lausodunon of Lousodunon werd genoemd.
