Luchthaven Buttwil werd gebouwd als vervanging voor de luchthaven Spreitenbach, die moest wijken voor het goederenstation en de steeds groter wordende luchthaven Zürich. De eerste houder was de belangenvereniging Luchthaven Buttwil.
Het wordt voornamelijk gebruikt door de vliegschool Eichenberger AG en Central Helicopter Service AG voor de vliegopleiding op vaste-vleugel vliegtuigen en helikopters. Bovendien worden vanaf daar arbeids- en vrachtvluchten uitgevoerd voor de berg- en huttenvoorziening van de regio.
