Het neobarokke gemeentelijke theater werd geopend in 1903 en werd tussen 2015-2016 gemoderniseerd met ingrijpende structurele veranderingen in de backstage en het auditorium. Het theater kreeg van seizoen 2011/2012 tot en met 2020/2021 een nieuwe handelsnaam als Konzert Theater Bern dat de vier verschillende secties van het theater vertegenwoordigt; het Bern Symphony Orchestra (BSO), Musiktheater (Opera), Schauspiel (Theater) en Tanz (Dans). Vanaf seizoen 2021/2022 heet het theater Bühnen Bern.
