De wetenschapper en geograaf Alexander von Humboldt arriveerde in 1800 in Havana en verbleef er. Hij maakte er zijn Latijns-Amerikaanse expeditie.
Humboldt wordt beschouwd als de "tweede ontdekker van Cuba" vanwege al het wetenschappelijke en sociale onderzoek dat hij in deze Spaanse kolonie uitvoerde. Tijdens een eerste verblijf van drie maanden in Havana bestonden zijn eerste taken uit het grondig in kaart brengen van die stad en de nabijgelegen plaatsen Guanabacoa, Regla en Bejucal.
