Volgens de overlevering vormde het Teutoburger Woud in de Romeinse tijd het toneel van gruwelijke gevechten. In het jaar 7 na Christus werd de Romeinse Generaal Varus naar het Teuroburger Woud gestuurd om de Germanen die onder leiding stonden van Arminius ('Hemann'), eronder te houden. Maar Arminius won en jonderd jaar geleden kreeg hij postuum een eigen wandelpad, de Hermannsweg.
