Het hof van Karel de Grote wordt vermoedelijk gesitueerd hier in Ingelheim am Rhein bij Mainz aan de Rijn, hoewel deze locatie door de tijd heen werd gesymboliseerd als de centrale macht van het Karolingische Rijk. Hier speelt zich ook het verhaal af van Karel ende Elegast, een van de bekendste Middelnederlandse ridderverhalen dat deel uitmaakt van de Vlaamse literaire canon.
