Steele is een oostelijke wijk van de stad Essen en wordt binnen deze als een middelcentrum ingeschaald. Steele was van 1578 tot de annexatie door de stad Essen in 1929 een zelfstandige stad aan de Ruhr.
Steele grenst in het noorden aan Kray, in het noordoosten aan Leithe, in het oosten aan Freisenbruch, in het zuidoosten aan Horst, in het zuiden aan Überruhr, in het zuidwesten aan Bergerhausen en in het westen aan Huttrop.
