De Gelster is een 17,5 km lange, linker, respectievelijk zuidwestelijke zijrivier van de Werra in de Werra-Meißner-Kreis in het noordoosten van Hessen, Duitsland.
De Gelster, die tot de grootste zijrivieren van de Werra op Hessisch grondgebied behoort en volledig door het Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land stroomt, ontspringt aan de noordhelling van de Hirschberg, die zich zuidwestelijk van Großalmerode als hoogste berg van het Kaufunger Wald verheft. De bron bevindt zich op een moerassige hoogvlakte op ongeveer 470 tot 480 m hoge Pfaffenberg, een noordelijke uitloper van de Hirschberg nabij de Bundesstraße 451 op ongeveer 455 m.
