Het Vöhlinschloss bevindt zich op een dominante locatie boven de stad Illertissen in de Landkreis Neu-Ulm. Het moderne kasteel is de opvolger van de hoogmiddeleeuwse burcht Tissen en is tegenwoordig de zetel van twee musea. Bovendien dient het als conferentiecentrum voor hogescholen.
Het veelzijdige kasteelcomplex bevindt zich op een klein terreinpunt dat aan de westelijke rand vanuit de in noord-zuidrichting lopende, valbegrenzende heuvelrug naar het noordwesten uitsteekt in het onderliggende Illertal. Behalve naar het zuidoosten valt het terreinpunt aan alle kanten ongeveer 30 meter steil af, waardoor het kasteel vanuit het Illertal goed zichtbaar is. De enige begaanbare weg naar het kasteel leidt via de Schlossallee vanuit oostelijke richting, waarbij deze kort voor het bereiken van de kasteelgracht naar het noordwesten afbuigt. Daarnaast zijn er twee met trappen uitgeruste voetgangerspaden in het westen naar de Bräuhausstraße en in het oosten naar de Vöhlinstraße.
