Tijdens de industrialisatie in het Ruhrgebied werd op 1 december 1872 een deel van de door de Rijnlandse Spoorwegmaatschappij geëxploiteerde spoorlijn Mülheim-Heißen–Oberhausen-Osterfeld Nord tussen Heißen via het aftakpunt Schönebeck en Borbeck tot Frintrop aanvankelijk in gebruik genomen voor het goederenverkeer. Borbeck was een industriële locatie vanwege de aanwezige steenkoolvoorraden. De opstart voor het personenvervoer volgde op 1 juli 1879 tussen Heißen en Osterfeld Nord. De spoorrails, zeven dubbelsporige sporen voor goederen- en personenvervoer, bevonden zich ongeveer in de lijn van de huidige Heinrich-Brauns-Straße. In 1908 werd begonnen met het verleggen van de rails naar een dam.
