De woonwijk Altenhof bestaat uit de twee bouwfasen van de woonwijk Altenhof I, die tussen 1893 en 1907 werd opgericht, en de woonwijk Altenhof II uit de jaren 1907 tot 1914. Altenhof I ligt in de Essense stadsdeel Rüttenscheid, Altenhof II in Stadtwald. Beide werden gebouwd door de Friedrich Krupp AG voor hun voormalige werknemers. In die tijd was het een revolutionaire sociale inzet dat hier ouderen, invaliden en alleenstaanden huurvrij mochten wonen. Tegenwoordig zijn de nog aanwezige delen van de woonwijk Altenhof een getuigenis van historische woonontwikkeling en maken zij deel uit van de route van de industriecultuur.
