Kasteel Königsberg werd in het midden van de 13e eeuw gebouwd door de graven van Solms op een heuvel boven de wijk Königsberg van de gemeente Biebertal in de Landkreis Gießen in Hessen.
De oprichting van het heuvelkasteel dateert vermoedelijk uit de periode rond 1240/50, toen het graafschap Solms werd verdeeld in de territoria Solms-Königsberg, Solms-Burgsolms en Solms-Braunfels. De bouwer was waarschijnlijk graaf Marquard van Solms, die als voorvader van de lijn Solms-Königsberg een eigen kasteel nodig had voor het bestuur van zijn gebied en als woning. Het is echter ook denkbaar dat het kasteel al eerder bestond en bij de verdeling aan Marquard werd toegewezen. Marquards zoon, Reimbold I. van Solms, was de eerste die zich na zijn woonplaats op kasteel Königsberg in 1257 graaf van Cunigesberg noemde.
