De bron van de Humbach ligt in een weiland ten noordoosten van Ilmenau, direct oostelijk van de afrit Ilmenau-Oost van de A 71, in het gebied Bücheloh. Onder het dorp vormt hij een vallei, waarin de B 87 en de Humbachsteichen liggen.
De Humbachsteichen zijn kunstmatige, rechthoekige vijvers die voornamelijk voor de viskweek dienen.
Over de vallei loopt de 290 meter lange Humbachtalbrug, die behoort tot de tracé van de hogesnelheidslijn Nürnberg–Erfurt.
