De Hornisgrinde is met 1163 meter boven NAP de hoogste berg van het noordelijke Zwarte Woud. Het is een langgerekte bergrug met een lengte van 2 kilometer die in noord-zuid richting ligt. De zuidelijke top is toegankelijk via de Mummelsee (de weg is afgesloten voor autoverkeer). Op de weg naar de top worden de hoogtemeters duidelijk aangegeven met witte tekst. Op de top staat een uitzichtstoren. Ook de noordelijke top (met 1130 meter net iets lager dan de zuidelijke top) is toegankelijk, en wordt gemarkeerd door een grote televisietoren.
