Prins Leopold van Salm-Salm, die zijn naam gaf aan de latere mijn in Hervest-Dorsten, maakte afspraken met de mijnbouwmaatschappijen over boor- en winrechten. De regale eigenaar had recht op een procent van de verkoopwaarde van de gewonnen kolen, wat echter kon worden afgelost door een eenmalige betaling. De boring verliep vanwege het doorstromende zand uiterst moeizaam en kon alleen met de vriesmethode worden uitgevoerd. In 1913 produceerde de mijn Fürst Leopold met een jaarlijkse capaciteit van aanvankelijk 39.000 ton de eerste kolen. Een 900 meter lange spoorlijn verbond de mijn met het staatsstation Hervest-Dorsten.
