Karlstein is een dorp in de marktgemeente Regenstauf in de Landkreis Regensburg in Beieren. Karlstein was tot 1978 de zetel van de gelijknamige gemeente.
De naam van de plaats kan afgeleid zijn van het kasteel van Chadolth. De eerste heren van Karlstein waren de Hofer van Lobenstein. Voor 1381 werd het bezit aan de Leuchtenberg verpand, die in 1393 het kasteel verbouwde. Hier stond oorspronkelijk het middeleeuwse kasteel Karlstein, dat volledig is overbouwd door het huidige kasteel uit de 16e en 19e eeuw.
