Het dorp ligt aan de helling van een berg op het hoogland van de Frankische Alb op een hoogte van 521 m boven NHN, zeven kilometer noordoostelijk van Simmelsdorf.
Door de bestuursherzieningen aan het begin van de 19e eeuw in het koninkrijk Beieren werd Unternaifermühle met het Tweede Gemeente-Edict een deel van de landgemeente Großengsee, waartoe ook het parochiedorp Sint Helena, het dorp Winterstein, de buurt Oberachtel en de eenheden Mittelnaifermühle, Obernaifermühle en Unternaifermühle behoorden.
