Fibonacci populariseerde het Hindoearabische cijfersysteem in de westerse wereld. Hij is ook bekend om de Fibonacci-reeks, die wordt gekenmerkt door het feit dat elk getal na de eerste twee de som is van de twee voorgaande getallen. Fibonacci-getallen komen voor in een grote verscheidenheid aan planten en in veel levende organismen.
