De Auvergne wordt ook weleens de groene long van Frankrijk genoemd. Het is een bijzonder groene plaats centraal gelegen in Frankrijk. De Auvergne heeft de natuurliefhebber niet alleen meren en bossen te bieden, het bevat namelijk het grootse vulkanisch gebied in Europa. In dit vulkanisch gebied kan je een heel gamma aan vulkaantypes bezichtigen. De slakkenkegels komen het meeste voor op aarde alsook in de Keten van de Puys. Ze worden ook wel Strombolikegels genoemd en zijn makkelijk te herkennen. In de Auvergne vallen er ook heel wat architecturale schatten te ontdekken, zoals kastelen en romaanse kerken. Er zijn een tiental dorpjes waar nog steeds de charme van de Belle Epoque aanwezig is. Op culinairvlak kan men de kazen Saint-Nectarine en Salers proeven.
