Melle is een gemeente in het Franse departement Deux-Sèvres in de regio Nouvelle-Aquitaine en telt 3851 inwoners . De plaats maakt deel uit van het arrondissement Niort.Gedurende de middeleeuwen was Melle een centrum van muntslag, dankzij de zilvermijnen onder en rondom de stad. Deze zijn ontgonnen van 602 tot ten minste 995. Er werd galeniet gewonnen, een lood-zilvermengsel. Het lood werd allereerst gebruikt om belasting te betalen aan de Franse koningen: onder Dagobert I werd er jaarlijks 8000 pond lood naar Parijs gestuurd, waar het gebruikt werd voor het dak van de Saint-Denisbasiliek.
