Villers-Cotterêts is beroemd vanwege het invoeren van Frans als de officiële taal in het koninkrijk in plaats van regionale talen zoals het Occitaans en ook Latijn. Dit gebeurde via de ordonnantie van Villers-Cotterêts die in 1539 ondertekend werd door koning Frans I van Frankrijk ('François Ier').
