Gelegen op een kalkstenen heuvel, 413 meter boven de zeespiegel, ligt Charroux. Het kreeg het label "mooiste dorp in Frankrijk." De stad is omgeven door wallen. Charroux werd geteisterd door de pest in 1422. Het werd herhaaldelijk geplunderd en vrijgekocht tijdens religieuze oorlogen. Tijdens de Franse Revolutie werd de achthoekige klokkentoren van de kerk van St. Johannes de Doper van zijn top ontdaan. Je kan hier nog het verleden opsnuiven. Charroux is ook de thuisbasis van vele ambachtelijke winkels, waaronder de beroemde mosterd, die veel voor de reputatie van het dorp heeft gedaan.
