De plaats maakt deel uit van het arrondissement Cherbourg-Octeville.Van de tijd van Willem de Veroveraar tot de Franse Revolutie was de benedictijnenabdij van Montebourg actief. Deze abdij had in de Middeleeuwen relaties met kapittels van Engelse kathedralen.
