Alles veranderde voor Paul Cézanne toen hij de impressionisten leerde kennen. Hij liep al hoog op met hun pionier, Edouard Manet, van wiens Déjeuner sur l’herbe hij een pastiche-versie maakte. Camille Pissaro ontfermde zich rond 1870 over de jonge kunstenaar en trok hem mee naar buiten, naar hier, Auvers-sur-Oise, waar een hele generatie tijdgenoten neerstreek die hun schildersezel opstelden in de vrije natuur. Cezanne nam hun techniek over, die van de vederlichte en energieke toets. Ook de warme, intense kleuren doken vanaf dat moment op. Maar anders dan zijn vrienden-impressionisten was hij niet uit op het capteren van het vluchtige moment in verf.
