Kembs, een oud Gallo-Romeins dorp (vroeger Cambete genoemd), ontwikkelde zich langs de as van een Romeinse weg die Straatsburg met Augst in Zwitserland verbond. Later werd Kembs een belangrijk relaisstation voor de Royal Post Office (het hoefijzer op het wapen herinnert aan deze periode). Tussen 1928 en 1932 werd in Kembs de eerste van tien waterkrachtcentrales gebouwd op het Frans-Duitse deel van de Rijn, op hetzelfde moment dat het eerste deel van het Grand Canal d'Alsace werd aangelegd onder leiding van ingenieur Koechlin. De centrale, die op 9 oktober 1932 werd ingehuldigd door de president van de Republiek, Albert Lebrun, werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog verwoest, herbouwd en in 1945 weer in gebruik genomen.
