Met ruim 9000 hectare is het Fôret de Mormal het grootste bos van Departement Nord Pas de Calais. Het wordt ook wel Zwarte Woud genoemd, omdat het dicht begroeid is en er weinig licht binnen valt. De namen van de plaatsen rond het bos zeggen genoeg: Preux-au-Bois, Fontaine-au-Bois, Aulnoye-Aymeries (= aulnes(elzen)), Le Quesnoy (= le chêne (eik)). Het bos is van wezenlijke invloed op zijn omgeving. Midden in het bos ligt Locquignol, in de Middeleeuwen gesticht als jachtslot voor de graven van Henegouwen.
