De Cevennen is een bergketen die deel uitmaakt van het Centraal Massief. Het hoogste punt is de Mont Lozère (1702m). Het heuvelachtige terrein had een effect in de geschiedenis. De Cevennen kenden een hoge concentratie Hugenoten (protestanten) omdat zij zich hier in de 17e eeuw in de Cevennen konden verstoppen. In het begin van de 18e eeuw kwam deze bevolking, de Camisards genoemd, in opstand tegen de monarchie. Deze gebeurtenissen staan niet los van het landschap van gemakkelijk te verbergen plaatsen.
