Vincent van Gogh en zijn broer Theo liggen begraven op de begraafplaats van Auvers-sur-Oise. Op 27 juli 1890, 37 jaar oud, verwondde Van Gogh zichzelf in de borst met een pistool. Hij wilde zichzelf door het hart schieten, maar maakte een klassieke fout door te denken dat het hart zich ter hoogte van de linkertepel bevindt. Hij miste hierdoor en stierf op 29 juli aan inwendige bloedingen met Theo aan zijn zijde. Een half jaar later overleed ook Theo. Deze liet een zoon achter, Vincent Willem, de grootvader van de bekende cineast en columnist Theo van Gogh die in 2004 in Amsterdam vermoord zou worden en eveneens door de kogel zou sterven, evenals zijn beroemd familielid.
