De Basilique Notre-Dame-du-Port speelt een belangrijke rol in het boek van De Bekeerlinge van Stefan Hertmans. Hij beschrijft het als volgt: 'Het gevoel op een belangwekkend kruispunt te staan overvalt me pas goed wanneer ik afdaal naar de cypte. Hier is de jonge vluchtelinge voor het laatst komen bidden, vergifenis komen vragen voor haar bekering. Ze wist dat haar Joods doopsel niet veraf ,eer was en dat er geen terugkeer mogelijk was.'
Het valt de auteur op dat je meer dan tien treden dient af te dalen voor je op het voormalige niveau van de kerk uitkomt. Dat wijst erop dat het een behoorlijk oude kerk is. Dat komt omdat men vroeger alle afval en uitwerpeselen op straat wierp. Om het een beetje draaglijk en begaanbaar te houden werd er dikwijls een laag zand op de weg gegooid.
