Dit prachtige geklasseerde gebouw, gebouwd vanaf de 16de eeuw en nu prefectuur van de Ardennen en hoofdkwartier van de departementsraad, was eerst het Palais des Tournelles, residentie van de prinsen van Gonzaga in de 16e eeuw, daarna de Koninklijke Ingenieursschool waar meer dan 600 militaire ingenieurs werden opgeleid tussen 1748 en 1794.
Het centrale fronton, versierd met beelden van helmen, borstplaten en kanonnen, getuigt van het militaire verleden van het gebouw.
met in het bijzonder de École Royale du Génie de Mézières.
In 1804 werd het Palais des Tournelles een prefectuur.
