De Ffestiniog Railway is een smalspoorlijn met een spoorwijdte van 1 ft 11½ in, nominale 1 ft 11 5/8 in, in het Welshe graafschap Gwynedd. Opgericht in 1832, is het de oudste actieve smalspoorlijn en tevens de oudste nog bestaande particuliere spoorwegonderneming ter wereld.
Met de groei van de steden in Europa tijdens de Industriële Revolutie nam ook de vraag naar vuurvaste dakmaterialen toe. Leisteen had zich hiervoor uitstekend bewezen: Wales had een lange traditie in de leisteenwinning, aangezien zich machtige afzettingen met name in Snowdonia in Noord-Wales bevonden. Dit leidde begin 19e eeuw tot de oprichting van talrijke lokale mijnbouwcentra, ook in Blaenau Ffestiniog, ongeveer 20 km van de kust gelegen. De kwetsbare leisteenplaten werden met lastdieren en vrachtauto's naar beneden gebracht, op kleine rivierbootjes op de Dwyryd overgeladen en uiteindelijk aan de kust op zeewaardige schepen geladen.
