Wetenschappers hebben eeuwenlang geloofd dat Groot-Brittanië, het hoofdeiland van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, miljoenen jaren geleden ontstaan is door het samengaan van twee oude landmassa's: Laurentia en Avalonia. Uit een studie in 2018 bleek nu echter dat nog een derde landmassa, Armorica, ook betrokken was bij dat proces. Het grootste deel van Cornwall en een stuk van Devon, in het uiterste zuidwesten van Groot-Brittannië, blijken vroeger tot wat nu Frankrijk is behoord te hebben.
