De Chiltern Hills of, zoals ze lokaal en historisch bekend staan, de Chilterns, is een reeks heuvels ten noordwesten van Londen. Ze vormen een kalkwand over Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire en Bedfordshire. [1] Een groot deel van de heuvels werd in 1965 officieel aangewezen als Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
De Chilterns hebben een oppervlakte van 322 vierkante mijl (830 km2) die zich uitstrekt over 45 mijl (72 km) in een zuidwesten tot een noordoostelijke diagonaal van Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire tot Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Op hun breedst zijn ze 12 mijl (19 km). [2]
De noordwestgrens van de heuvels wordt duidelijk bepaald door de helling. De diphelling is per definitie geleidelijker en versmelt met het landschap in het zuidoosten. [3] Het zuidwestelijke eindpunt is de rivier de Theems. De heuvels nemen langzaam af in prominentie in het noordoosten van Bedfordshire. [4]
