Oorspronkelijk een krijgsgevangenenkamp, werd het begin 1942 gebouwd op een landbouwperceel aan de rand van Malton, door een klein contingent van militaire personeel dat vanuit Castle Douglas, Schotland, was gereisd. Hun taak was het construeren van een prikkeldraadomheining en het opzetten van tenten om een tijdelijk kamp te vormen voor Italiaanse krijgsgevangenen die door geallieerde troepen in Noord-Afrika waren gevangen genomen.
