In de Baai van La Spezia verdronk dichter Percy Shelley, de man van Mary Shelley op 8 juli 1822. Zijn zeilboot zonk tijdens een storm. Hij zeilde van Livorno terug naar Lerici. Zijn lichaam spoelde aan op de kust nabij Viareggio.
Mary Shelly is vooral gekend van haar roman Frankenstein. Percy Shelley was ook een gekende Engelse dichter. Ze waren goede vrienden met Lord Byron en de arts James Lind, die experimenten uitvoerde met electriciteit op kikkers. Niet onwaarschijnlijk een aanzet tot de roman Frankenstein.
