Op 6 april 2009, werd een aardbeving van 5.8 op de schaal van Richter hier gemeten in L'Aquila. Aardbevingen markeren de geschiedenis van L'Aquila, omdat de stad gedeeltelijk is gelegen op een oude meer-bed dat de seismische activiteit versterkt. Op 6 april 2009, om 01:32 GMT werd een aardbeving van magnitude 6,3 gemeten in Midden-Italië met zijn epicentrum in de buurt van L'Aquila. Tussen 3000 en 10.000 gebouwen in L'Aquila vielen in duigen. 308 mensen werden gedood door de aardbeving, en ongeveer 1.500 mensen raakten gewond. Ongeveer 65.000 mensen werden dakloos.
