Margareta van Parma, een dochter van keizer Karel V en diens minnares Johanna van der Gheynst, werd geboren in 1522 in Oudenaarde. Als halfzuster van Filips II van Spanje regeerde zij van 1559 tot 1567 als landvoogdes over de Nederlanden. In die periode probeerde ze, met gematigdheid en overleg, de spanningen tussen katholieken en opkomende protestantse bewegingen in toom te houden. Haar beleid van verzoening stuitte echter op weerstand bij Filips II, die haar uiteindelijk verving door de hardere hertog van Alva om de Reformatie streng te onderdrukken. Na haar aftreden trok Margareta zich terug in Italië. Zij stierf op 18 januari 1586 in Ortona, aan de Adriatische kust.
