Hotel l'albergo di Campo Imperatore is een landmark op het einde van de klim naar de Gran Sasso d'Italia. Maar het is ook een belangrijke historische plaats. Dit hotel werd de gevangenis van dictator Benito Mussolini in augustus 1943 na zijn val totdat hij werd bevrijd door Duitse commando's in september 1943. Adolf Hitler gaf de opdracht aan zijn SS-kapitein Otto Skorzeny om hem te bevrijden. Er werden 90 commando's in zweefvliegtuigen naar de Gran Sasso gestuurd. Hitler veronderstelde dat de redding van Il Duce een hart onder de riem zou zijn van de fascisten in Italië. Toen men Mussolini bevrijdde zou hij gezegd hebben "Ik wist dat mijn vriend me niet zou vergeten".
