De luchthaven staat ook bekend als de Luchthaven Cortina d'Ampezzo en de Luchthaven Fiames omdat het zich in de frazione Fiames bevindt.
De luchthaven werd gebouwd voor de Winterspelen van 1956. Hij is sinds een ongeval met een Cessna 206 op 31 mei 1976 gesloten voor verkeer. De piloot en alle vijf de passagiers kwamen om het leven bij een crash direct na de take-off onder moeilijke windomstandigheden.
