De reden waarom je hier in de Santo Spirito Kerk Michelangelo's Crucifix vindt is nogal eigenaardig. Toen hij zeventien jaar oud was, mocht Michelangelo anatomische studies maken op de lijken die uit het ziekenhuis van het klooster kwamen. De priester Nicholaio Bichellini, dimet risico op excommunicatie, liet Michelangelo zijn dissecties 's nachts uitvoeren. In ruil voor deze "speciale behandeling" heeft hij een houten kruisbeeld gemaakt die over het hoge altaar werd geplaatst. Vandaag is de kruisbeeld in de achthoekige sacristie te vinden die vanuit het westelijke gang van de kerk kan worden bereikt.
