Het Bargello was eeuwenlang het paleis van de Capitano di Giustizia, met gevangenissen, verhoorkamers en plaatsen voor executies en ophangingen.
In 1505 werden Frosino di Bartolo en twee handlangers hier aan de vensters opgehangen wegens de verkrachting van de vrouw van een arme man; dat is een goed gedocumenteerd historisch feit.
Ook politieke tegenstanders (zoals Baccio Valori en zijn medestanders in 1537) zijn op de binnenplaats onthoofd.
