De Amiata is een oude, inactieve vulkaan, gekenmerkt door vulkanische rotsen en kleine meren. De piek ligt op 1.738 meter (5.702 ft) boven zeeniveau.
Het water van de berg voedt het Fiora-aquaduct, dat een groot deel van Zuid-Toscane en een deel van Noord-Lazio bedient. In de Amiata ontspringen ook de rivieren Fiora en Albegna, de laatste op de berg Buceto, die de meest zuidwestelijke uitloper van het massief vormt.
