Piazza Castelnuovo vormt samen met het aangrenzende Piazza Ruggero Settimo één enkele stedelijke ruimte, gewoonlijk Piazza Politeama genoemd, dankzij de aanwezigheid van Teatro Politeama, het tweede belangrijkste theater van de stad na Teatro Massimo.
Het plein vertegenwoordigt een van de populairste stadspleinen.
Op Piazza Castelnuovo bevinden zich een structuur genaamd "Palchetto della Musica" (werk van Salvatore Valenti), het monument voor Carlo Cottone (werk van Giovan Battista Palazzotto en Domenico Costantino), de sculpturen "Nautica" (werk van Mario Rutelli), "Lavoro " (werk van Benedetto Civiletti) en "Senzatetto" (werk van Pasquale Civiletti).
Het plein is vernoemd naar Carlo Cottone, prins van Castelnuovo, een van de voorstanders van de Siciliaanse grondwet van 1812.
